This set of photographs from my ongoing long-term project depicts a short story that happens on the coast monotonously and perpetually and responds to convoluted relations between the spoken and the visual. The portfolio consists of a selection of photographs but is called the Voice of the Sea. The repetitive sound of crashing waves against the shore is accompanied by a fascinating sight. The sight is easy to reproduce by a camera, however, the sound remains absent. Therefore, the photographs are composed so that the viewer gets a sense of the eternal moment that the sea represents, the sound that always stays at the coast.
They portray the coast in a simple, straightforward way – a way, that excludes any interruptive elements and shows the sea in its natural form. The contrasts between the sky and water’s surface and the infinite vanishing point prompt one to rest and pause for a thought; to listen to the sound being reproduced by the enormous body of water. The abstract connection between nature and the human eye. Inspired by Alfred Stieglitz who aimed to capture the sky and sun in an abstract form, it was originally called Music and Songs of the Sky but soon came to prefer the term Equivalents, similarly, The Voices of the Sea portfolio illustrates the fascinating, yet invisible connection between the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
Although none of these subjects are physically present in the photographs, the composition is supposed to visualize them in their abstract form. As numerous critics suggested Alfred Stieglitz used the representational capacity of the photographic medium to explore and express his inner thoughts and feelings. So is the work in this portfolio. It intends to prompt the spectator to look for hidden inner thoughts and feelings that are absent within the boundaries of consciousness. They represent the voice of one of the mightiest elements on this planet, The Voice of the Sea.
